What do Elephants eat? asked Dylan, who had just finished dressing himself up in a elephant costume and which I am pretty sure prompted the question.instead of answering him, I questioned him back “what do you think they eat?” “I don’t know, it is all in the computer” he answered pointing to the teachers office. I suggested we look it up then since we don’t know what do elephants eat.<\/p>\n
I bring the computer back and the children gather around. We watched a forty seconds video of an elephant picking out leaves from trees and eating them. I ask the children if after watching the video they knew what elephants eat and they said “elephants eat trees” it took a few minutes for them to come to the realization that they eat the leaves and not the whole tree.<\/p>\n
After their first question was answered it gave way to others like “what do lions eat?” “what do cheetah’s eat” and “what monkeys eat?” all from different children who were sitting around in our little research group on the floor. I prompted the other children to answer the questions and “lions eat potatoes” says one “meat” another adds in and soon we had to leave our circle because it was time to organize our classroom and continue the day’s routine.<\/p>\n
Some of the children seem to know the costume they want to make for costume day. We have Elise who wants to be “Paper bag princess dinosaur”, Louise who will be “a lion”, Dylan wants to be “a ghost” and Maya “a monkey”. We have asked them to think of what would they need to make their costumes.
